Specifically, being a member of the Bureau of Enforcement Program (BOFE) program, which also includes the Labor Employment Task Force (LETF), and /or the Private Attorneys General Act (PAGA) Unit , you will have an impact on California workers through investigation and enforcement of state laws covering workers’ compensation insurance coverage, child labor, cash pay, unlicensed contractors, Industrial Welfare Commission orders, as well as group claims involving minimum wage and overtime claims.

Under supervision of and receiving general direction from a Deputy Labor Commissioner Supervisor, in the State Labor Commissioner’s Office of BOFE, LETF, and/or PAGA programs, the incumbent is responsible for the investigation and enforcement of the Indusrial Welfare Commissioner orders and laws covering workers’ compenstion insurance coverage, child labor, cash pay, unlicensed contractors, as well as group claims involving minimum wage and overtime. The incumbent of the program (ie BOFE, LETF, and/or PAGA) may also work in partnership with other governmental entities on the investigation and prosecution of group claims.

The Deputy Labor Commissioner I (DLC I) classification has an updated examination. A new exam was issued on December 18, 2025 . Prior exam eligibility is no longer valid. Candidates must take and pass the current DLC I exam to establish eligibility.

The Industrial Relations Representative (IRR) classification has been renamed to Labor Compliance Representative (LCR) . A new exam was issued on December 15, 2025. Previous IRR exam eligibility is no longer valid. Applicants must take and pass the new LCR exam to be eligible for appointment.

Effective July 1, 2025, specific Bargaining Units and associated Excluded State employees are subject to a salary reduction between 2% - 4.62% in exchange for hours in the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) per month. Working Conditions

The duties of this position are conducted both in an office and field setting. The incumbent is required to travel for field operations and trainings. The incumbent will have access to a state vehicle, laptop computer, printer, cellular phone, and other equipment. While in the field, the incumbent may be exposed to dirt, odors, noise, fumes, uneven surfaces, stairs, high-rise buildings, extreme weather conditions, and fast-moving equipment.

Special Requirements

A willingness to travel and work irregular hours are required.

Ability to objectively interpret & apply rules & regulations; ability to gather and analyze data.
